How to write a book listing that sells

By the ApnaBook team · 2 min read · Updated

Buyers scroll quickly. A listing gets a second look when the title tells them exactly which book it is, the photos show the real condition, and the description answers the questions they would otherwise have to message you about. It takes five minutes to do properly.

Photos: show the truth, in good light

  • Shoot near a window in daylight; avoid flash, which hides wear and causes glare.
  • Use a plain background such as a table or bedsheet.
  • Take at least four photos: front cover, back cover with the MRP, the imprint page with edition and year, and an inside page.
  • If there is highlighting or damage, photograph it. Buyers trust sellers who show flaws.

Title: the exact book, not a sales pitch

Write the title the way a buyer would search for it: the book's name, the author or publisher, and for textbooks the class, subject and medium. "Class 11 Accountancy Part 1 & 2, Gujarati medium" is far more useful than "Best book for exams!!!".

Description: a template you can copy

A good description is short but complete. Cover these points in a few sentences each:

  1. Edition and year, and which syllabus or exam it suits.
  2. Honest condition: binding, any writing or highlighting, any missing or loose pages.
  3. What is included: extra parts, solution books, notes.
  4. Why you are selling, if it helps ("finished Class 10", "read once").
  5. Where and when you can meet.

Pick the right category and condition

Buyers often browse by category, so a book in the wrong one is hard to find. Choose the condition honestly — overstating it leads to awkward handovers and renegotiation, and understating it a little often leaves the buyer pleasantly surprised.

After you post

Reply to messages promptly; buyers often message several sellers and go with whoever answers first. Mark the book as sold as soon as the deal is done so other buyers are not disappointed. Every listing on ApnaBook is reviewed before it goes live, so listings that follow our community guidelines appear faster.
